First Aid Kit avian List - Are you ready?

After an emergency situation occurs, it is not the time to try to put together your first aid kit. Being prepared is the key for emergency use and is the first step in putting together a first aid kit. You can buy first aid kits or build your own birds, which are usually much cheaper. Listed below are items that must be included in the first aid kit.

Antibiotic ointment and antiseptic powder (to fight infection) Blood Stopper Contact your veterinarian (days, nights,weekdays and weekends) Corn starch. Styptic pencil or styptic powder (used to stop bleeding) See warning below. Cotton balls, cotton swabs and gauze squares Flashlight (To provide for carbohydrates and energy) of honey or Karo syrup Hydrogen peroxide (used to clean wounds) Infrared lamp (250 watt - large birds) or a hospital Cage (small birds) Nail clippers Pliers or tweezers Needles robust Kaopectate or Pepto Bismol (used for some cases of poisoning) Pet Carrier(Used to transport your sick bird to the vet) Plastic pipette (used for the administration of fluids and wounds with irrigation water) Pedialyte or Gatorade powder (used to provide energy and electrolytes) Roll of gauze bandage Scissors Surgical tape or adhesive tape (for taping bandages) Towel to tie up your bird First aid instruction book or pamphlet for the birds

The use of most of these points, except perhaps the infrared lamp on hand. Birds usually havea high metabolic rate. One of the first things that can happen with a sick bird, is that she continues to eat properly. This can cause a drop in body temperature and, possibly, hypothermia, which can cause death.
